Black ★ Rock Shooter OVA - Epic or epically disappointing? *SPOILERS*
Epic or epically disappointing? The long-awaited OVA finally gets released, but how many people actually enjoyed the whole 50min series?
The series starts off with a dark scene with Black ★ Rock Shooter fighting another girl (not sure who) and the title. Seems epic enough? However after the title begins another scene that shows a girl, Mato. A typical morning for the start of a school day. Mato meets another girl, Yomi (who resembles Dead Master) who ignores her when their eyes meet. It turns out they are in the same class later. Another snippet of the alternate world and the opening ceremony for the new students.
Around the 15 minute of the OVA, Dead Master appears and they have a staring contest.
Well skipping parts, Mato & Yomi eventually become good friends while BRS & DM begin their fight... Like most of our lives, the two friends get split into different classes in the second year and start to communicate less while Mato makes a new friend, the manager of the basketball club, Yuu. Mato eventually senses something is wrong but Yomi suddenly has disappeared. She receives a call from Yomi but it hung up immediately. Sensing something, Mato runs to the park where she brought Yomi to once and finds the handphone strap she gave to her a while ago on the ground. Picking it up, a pillar of light engulfs her.
Meanwhile, BRS is captured by DM but she breaks free and hugs DM, which shows some sign of the consciousness of Yomi. DM struggles, but BRS holds on tight and eventually DM falls of the cliff which reveals Yomi & BRS. The castle crumbles and BRS runs out, carrying Yomi with her and she meets Mato. (skips spoiler part) They both join bodies & BRS reveals herself to be BLACK ★ ROCK SHOOTER.
The end... Credits roll down, and "What the hell did I just watch? I expected to see epic fighting, ot some friendship slice-of-life anime" is what I have been seeing for online reviews. Apparently I stupidly went to read reviews in the middle of the show, which gave me a bad impression. However, while continuing to watch, the story wasn't that bad at all... It was a beautiful friendship that some people take for granted but realises how important it was to them after the person is gone. I admit, I was disappointed at first after reading the reviews but the ending part was so lovely and touching that it made up for the disappointment. So to summarize, it had its good and bad points. For people who have not heard the song 'Black ★ Rock Shooter' by Hatsune Miku or seen the trailers, it would be enjoyable for them to watch since they do not expect much. However, for fans like me who have watched the trailers, it would be quite a great disappointment.
I just have one doubt, why exactly is another song used for the ending when the title is 'Black ★ Rock Shooter' and the main song is too titled 'Black ★ Rock Shooter'??? Its still a good ending though, and I hope you actually did enjoy the OVA regardless of the disappointment.
